Optimize Your Home Network
To get the most out of your fiber connection, follow these five pro-tips for your router setup:
1. Hardwire for Speed
Connect high-demand devices (like gaming consoles, work from home, and streaming TVs) directly to your router using an Ethernet cable. This provides the most stable and fastest connection possible.
2. Use 5GHz for Performance
Connect your primary phones, tablets, and laptops to the 5GHz WiFi band. You can manage which devices are on which band using your router’s mobile app.
3. Use 2.4GHz for Smart Home Tech
Place smart plugs, light bulbs, and children’s devices on the 2.4GHz WiFi band. This keeps your high-speed lanes clear for more important tasks.
4. Update Your Firmware
Ensure your router is running the latest firmware (software). Check for updates in your router's settings or app to ensure peak security and performance. Generally, routers should be replaced every 4-5 years.
5. Wire Your Mesh System
If you use a mesh WiFi system, connect the individual units via Ethernet cable rather than relying on a wireless "backhaul." This significantly boosts the speed of the satellite units. Wireless extenders are not recommended.
